FP4 is new for this season and is 30 minutes long. After FP4 is QP1. As mentioned, this is to determine the positions of last place. Similarly, if it rains during QP2 but is dry during the first qualifying session, every rider in QP1 might post a lap significantly faster than any rider in QP2, but will still only be able to qualify for the lower positions.
Remember, only MotoGP is affected by the new qualification process, Moto2 and Moto3 will run qualifying and free practices the same as last season.
You might be surprised to hear there really are a good few benefits for MotoGP. Firstly, you and I watching the first free practice sessions will be watching riders ride faster and harder to ensure they get into the all-important QP2 session.
The final 20 minutes or so of FP3 could be especially interesting as riders make a final last attempt to get into QP2, with riders just nipping in front on the timing sheets or falling back by a few tenths into the jaws of QP1.
We could get a good few surprises if top riders are struggling in free practice. The one hour session of qualifying that was used last year was often a bit dull until the final 20 minutes or so.
Riders and teams used the first half of QP as final setup testing, and only in the last few minutes went for a flying lap. With MotoGP becoming increasingly expensive, teams need to get more exposure to keep sponsors happy and get new ones on board.
We see more action, and the Marketing Directors of all the sponsors see more of their logos, helping to fund teams and make for, hopefully, larger grids and more competitive machines.
With less riders on track the riders themselves get the space they need to post their laps without obstruction. All too often we saw laps ruined by riders on out laps caught off guard.
It should also mean less riders trying to catch a tow from faster machines, something that irritated many people in MotoGP and was also a safety concern.
A small concern might exist for the riders that routinely find themselves in the position of not quite qualifying for QP2 outright, but every weekend top QP1 and run in QP2.
With so many riders this seems unlikely, but is worth keeping in mind for the season. After all, the prototype bikes now only have five engines to last the season without picking up grid penalties, so the extra running from competing in two qualification settings may have an effect, although is unlikely to affect the top riders or the championship battle.
It is very interesting what they have done with the qualifying in moto gp and I think that it is much more interesting to watch as I am a huge moto gp fan.
Its definitely exciting — we get to watch 30 minutes of flat out laps, which is exactly what we want to see in qualifying! They are both held at the same time of day as the race so track conditions can be pretty similar.
